Sept. 5 Spring Valley game
Mistakes Enable Spring Valley To Defeat PHS 30-20
Game Statistics
Mistakes proved too costly for Parkersburg’s Big Reds to overcome Friday at Stadium Field as visiting Spring Valley rallied to notch a 30-20 victory.
It was the fifth straight win for the Timberwolves against the Big Reds and was aided by fumbles, interceptions, penalties and even a defensive lapse that enabled Spring Valley to score on a long pass while being forced to play with a back-up quarterback.
Spring Valley took the opening kickoff after a 30 minute lightning delay start and immediately drove 78 yards on nine running plays, one of them a 53 yard run by Miguel Cain, to go ahead on a one yard run by Cain.
PHS immediately answered with a 60 yard touchdown run by Ethan Jones which saw him go over the right side, cut back left and out-run the defenders to tie the game at 6-all.
The Big Reds came up with a big defensive stop on the ensuing series as Devin Widman led a charge that stopped the Wolves on a fourth down play at the PHS three yard.
PHS followed that with a touchdown drive that was highlighted by two long runs by sophomore quarterback Alex Greer. Greer, who finished the game with 134 yard rushing on just eight carries, had runs of 20 and 55 yards on the drive which was capped by Sylas Cheuvront’s eight yard run right up the middle with 2:55 left in the first half. Cole Sisk’s kick made it 13-6.
But the mistakes started shortly after that when Spring Valley was forced to punt from its own 14 only to get the ball back when PHS fumbled the return at midfield. On the very next play Spring Valley caught everyone by surprise by throwing a pass to a wide open Dominic Hanshaw for a touchdown when the receiver got behind the secondary thanks in part to an official getting in the way of a PHS defender. The extra point tied the game at 13-13 with 1:16 left before the half.
The third quarter saw more bad luck for PHS as a snap from center rolled back to Greer and was recovered by the visitors at the PHS 37. The Timberwolves took the lead on a 22 yard field goal but only after PHS held on a first and goal situation.
Spring Valley ended the third quarter and started the fourth with a ground heavy attack that resulted in a five yard touchdown run to cap an 11-play, 58 yard drive and produce a 23-13 lead with 8:21 left to play.
The Big Reds drove to the Spring Valley 12 on their next possession but threw an interception in the end zone with 5:11 on the clock.
A 28 yard run by Cam Perdue and a 15-yard penalty helped the Wolves go 78 yards in seven plays to go up 30-14 with 1:14 left to play.
It took PHS just 41 seconds to score following that thanks to a 63 yard run by Greer and then a 26 yard TD pass to Tytan Parsons to make it 30-20 with 27 seconds left in the game.
Spring Valley had a 383-342 edge in total yards but had no turnovers while PHS gave the ball up three times and suffered 76 yards in penalties.
